Front Row is ALMOST as good as an AppleTV. The Mini can play a couple 1080 QT windows at the same time. I noticed the same thing, that the G4 sometimes starts to choke playing 1080 content. The Mini is WAY more powerful than the G4. I've a G4 1.5 pBook and also a current 2.0 Mini.

How well does the Mac Mini handle the 1080p content? As of right now I have a Power Book G4 running dvi to hdmi into my plasma.but it doesnt handle to video very gets really choppy and struggles through the movies.am I correct in assuming that my old power book just doesn't have to power to support that kind of media? Also when you talk about the restrictions of the Apple TV.for the most part it sounds like it struggles when streaming the media over a network, so does that mean it will handle all the hd content if it is stored directly on the apple tv or a hard drive that is connect to the apple tv through usb? The Mini has a DVI connector, and you can get a DVI->HDMI cable.Īs far as I can tell, the only downside to the Mini, apart from the price, is HD rentals are not yet supported. This type of file playing ability is built into the Mac Mini. The AppleTV can play this content really well.
For Apple, Intels Thunderbolt is the interface used to push video content out of their laptops to display device. So now I have a large USB hard drive plugged into an Airport Extreme holding a media library. For Apple, Intels Thunderbolt is the interface used to push video content out of their laptops to display device. So I use a modified AppleTV which will play content directly from a shared directory, without the need for an iTunes server. I found the restriction of having all the content in iTunes irritating. A server with an ethernet connection to the base station makes this more efficient. If that server is a Mac or a PC somewhere on the wireless network, you need a pretty stable network to handle the streaming. Out of the box, the Apple TV will only stream from a server running iTunes. The Mac Mini has no such restriction and can manage 1080p.

The upper limit is 720p content (1270x720) at 24fps. The AppleTV is limited in the types of file it can handle. But it's not perfect and requires workarounds.
And remember, I'm a little bit (ok a lot bit) of a n00b so plz be patient with me! I appreciate any help you can give me.If your goal is to stream HD content from a media library, the Apple TV can do it. So the problem is that I can't use DVI-to-HDMI cable on my hackintosh with graphics card 512-P3-N871-AR GeForce 9800 GTX+ (EVGA branded) and need some help if possible.

I somehow got to OSX 10.6.7, but I don't remember if that was through System Update or something else. I don't believe I've run any other custom software to update any kexts or anything, as far as I know it's just the bootloader. I didn't perform the audio kext update at the end, because I didn't need audio (I use an interface). Your image will be dark without this no matter what you source you use. The inverter controls the backlights on the iMacs screen. You can not use the signals source as the inverter. For installation, I followed this tutorial, using a store-bought Snow Leopard disc. If your iMac g4s inverter is not working you will need to replace it.
to-finish, with the exception of using a different hard-drive. I built it to the spec of the classic Life Hacker tutorial. Also, I figured there was no need to add onto a year old thread. I am able to get it working using a DVI-to-VGA converter at the card, but it's pretty low res, obviously, and defeats the purpose of using a TV as a monitor! I consider myself a power user, but really am not intimate with the inner workings of OSX so I wasn't really able to take anything away from that previous post. Pretty much having the same problems as this poster was having ( viewtopic.php?f=7&t=120) where if I try to plug it in after I've booted it freezes and I have to force restart. Hello, I'm having problems getting my hackintosh to work using a DVI-to-HDMI cable in order to use my 26" VIZIO TV as a monitor.
